Ain’t I a Woman
A work of art by low country Gullah artist Sonja Griffin Evans that depicts an African American woman in the rural south that works in the fields pickin’ cotton.
The title of the work of art was inspired by Sojourner Truth’s speech from the 1800’s titled “Ain’t I a Woman”. This speech spoke about how a woman can be “worked like a man (and beaten like a man) and so is considered less of a woman and less of human being.“
