The Art of Ernie Barnes
Ernie Barnes, affectionately known as “Big Rembrandt” by his teammates, is the first professional athlete to become a celebrated and internationally acclaimed artist.
Ernie was known for a unique style of elongation, energy, and movement. His artwork was frequently inspired by his roots in the south and memories of his childhood. His subject matter drew from these experiences and as a result, pool halls, barbershops, porch ladies, church, street singers, and sandlot games are depicted in his works of art.
His most famous painting Sugar Shack, which was inspired by a dance at the armory in his hometown of Durham, NC was shown in the credits of Good Times and on Marvin Gaye’s album cover. Many are unaware that he was the creative force behind JJ’s artwork on Good Times.
