He is widely regarded as one of the most important and renowned 20th-century sports figures, with some suggesting he might be the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. In 1999, he was designated Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC.
Muhammad Ali’s work on behalf of racial equality began in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was aware of and had experienced racism and white supremacy first-hand. His strong commitment to his boxing career was matched by his deep conviction that he had a higher calling. He constantly challenged racism, segregation, U.S. hegemony, and Jim Crow laws.
