The Baltimore Black Sox was a baseball team that operated from 1913 to 1936 in Baltimore, Maryland. The team was founded by Howard Young and started as an independent squad. They gained recognition when they became one of the original six teams to join the Eastern Colored League in 1923. The team transitioned through different leagues until 1932, when they landed in the East-West League. The team was then co-owned and managed by Joe Cambria, who moved their home games to Bugle Field.
During Cambria’s time as the team’s manager, several renovations and expansions were made, such as lighting installation to enable night games. However, the team disbanded in 1936 due to the East-West League ending in 1932. In addition, their application to rejoin the Negro National League in 1934 was rejected.
The Black Sox left a significant mark on history with their “Million Dollar Infield” in 1929. The infield consisted of Jud “Boojum” Wilson, Frank Warfield, Oliver Marcell, and Sir Richard Lundy. The media gave this name to the infield because of the players’ exceptional talent, which would have allegedly cost a Major League Baseball team a million dollars collectively in that era. Their prowess propelled the team to win over 70% of their games that season, clinching the American Negro League Championship.
Celebrated baseball players such as Leon Day, Pete Hill, Biz Mackey, Satchel Paige, Mule Suttles, Ben Taylor, and Jud Wilson have contributed to the team’s rich history and enduring reputation.
To ensure that your Baltimore Black Sox Cap remains in top condition, please follow the care instructions carefully. The cap should be hand washed only, using a mild detergent to gently cleanse without causing damage. Under no circumstances should bleach be used, as it could significantly alter the cap’s original hues and degrade the fabric. After washing, the cap should be allowed to air dry. This method helps in preserving the cap’s shape and the integrity of the embroidery details, ensuring that your cap continues to look as striking as the day you bought it.
Whether you’re a dedicated baseball fan, a collector of sports memorabilia, or simply someone who appreciates the rich heritage of the Negro Leagues, this cap is a must-have addition to your collection. Wear it with pride and keep the legacy alive!
