Bayard Rustin
An African American historical poster that pays tribute to the life and legacy of Bayard Rustin. This hidden figure was a leading strategist in the Civil Rights Movement and one of its most influential and effective organizers.
Rustin was instrumental in the formation of the SCLC, the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, played a large part in introducing Dr. King to the teachings of Gandhi and the Non-Violence philosophy, organized Freedom Rides, launched the A. Philip Randolph Institute to fight for economic justice for people of color.
Unfortunately Bayard was “was silenced, threatened, arrested, beaten, imprisoned and fired from important leadership positions, largely because he was an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era“.Â
President Barack Obama awarded him a Medal of Freedom posthumously in 2013.
The poster features images of Bayard Rustin during select moments of his life. It also features a powerful quote from the influential and effective strategist and organizer.
“When an individual is protesting society’s refusal to acknowledge his dignity as a human being, his very act of protest confers dignity on him. We need in every bay and community a group of angelic troublemakers. To be afraid is to behave as if the truth isn’t true….“
