Rube and the Giants
This image is from Kadir Nelson’s award winning book “We Are The Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball”.
This work of art depicts Rube Foster (fourth from right), founder of the Negro National League and owner of the Chicago American Giants, who “ran his team like it was a major league club.” Foster is shown here, circa 1920, calling his team together while scribbling instructions to be administered to his players. The team, having traveled first class in a plush and comfortable rented Pullman train car (most teams traveled by bus or passenger car), has just arrived in town to play a local team. They are greeted by curious local children as they disembark from the car. Pictured are: Christobal Torriente (second from right), Bingo De Moss (seventh from right in brown suit), and Dave Malarcher (walking down steps).
