Stringin’ Da Blu Line
The upright bass has long been considered a male-dominated instrument, but there have been many talented female bassists who have broken through this barrier. One such musician is Esperanza Spalding, who not only plays the upright bass but is also a renowned singer and composer. Other famous female upright bassists include Nicki Parrott, Mimi Jones, Kiyoshi Kitagawa, Linda Oh, Ellen Andrea Wang, Brandi Disterheft, Jennifer Leitham, Renaud Garcia-Fons, and Kate Davis.
Their inspiration led Gerald Ivey to create this stunning work of art titled “Stringin’ Da Blu Line” depicting an African American female musician “laying down the bottom” or “walking the dog” as the jazz musicians like to say. Created in Gerald’s celebrated style that includes intense color and texture.
