The Culture Keepers
An Afrocentric open edition work of art by Baltimore-based artist Larry “Poncho” Brown. It was originally created in 2013 as a commission for the African American Cultural Festival of Wake County. It depicts a group of African drummers and dancers that serve as “Keepers of the Culture”.
What is a Culture Keeper?  A person who ensures the history, culture, and values of a people persevere and is passed on from one generation to the next. Someone who has a strong, positive sense of self and a clear understanding of the values of the community as they work to build and uplift it. All while operating through an African-centered lens with the expressed intention of strengthening the collective African consciousness.
